Sixteen-year-old Katie Wickliff lives quietly in the small town of Elspeth's Grove, unaware of the troubled past that forced her grandmother to flee Russia with her when Katie was only a child. When people in the town begin to disappear, and Katie's own home is attacked by a terrifying creature, Katie and her grandmother return to Russia to find answers.

Pursuing them is the handsome William – who just might be a vampire. Katie discovers that William is indeed partially a vampire, but he is also one of the Sidh, an ancient clan whose members are gifted with great power – a clan to which Katie's deceased mother also belonged.

Soon, Katie discovers that her mother's seemingly natural death was actually murder, and she is forced to confront the question she wants to face the least Is William her otherworldly protector, or is he the dark creature who killed her mother eleven years ago?

Strange things have been happening around Katie Wickliff lately. First, her grandmother has a pair of mysterious visitors late at night. She starts having visions, a man's face in mirrors. And people from her school have started disappearing...

Pure has a number of elements to it. There's a lot of paranormal mystery, some romance, maybe even some coming of age YA. It's also a book of two halves, the first set in the States, where Katie and her grandmother have lived for a decade. The second half has them returning to their old home in a small Russian village.

The first half concentrates mostly on Katie's school life. Since the book is told in the first person, we get to hear Katie's thoughts on her friends and she comes across as a very real person. She gets confused when one of her male friends indicates he wants them to be something more. She gets worried and argumentative about her best friend's plan to run off to New York to become a model. She might be a but more mature than the average sixteen year old but the characterization never rings false.

We also get fragments of her personal history. Just fragments because Katie doesn't know all of it herself. It's only once the action moves to Russia that the revelations about her parents and her connection everything that's going on start to be revealed.

The second half also takes the book a lot deeper into the paranormal. Variations on vampires, forest spirits and others are brought up in fairly quick succession but without feeling like you're being overloaded. Before the climax of the novel, there are also a couple of twists and (I suspect) some set up for future books in the series (3 so far).

Pure is a good read, fairly fast paced and intriguing enough to warrant a look at future novels. I'd recommend for both YA readers and those looking for a new paranormal mystery.

Pure Book 1 Pure Series Pure Book Series Catherine Mesick 9780998663104 Books Reviews

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book when I started. Then I really got into the storyline.
Katie was quite mature for her age, but getting further into the book, I was able to understand why she seemed so mature.
Forces for good, and forces for evil littered the story. The more I read the more I had ideas who was who. Never make best with yourself on sure things.
I really enjoyed Pure.
Pure is the first book in the new Pure series by Catherine Mesick. The book opens with Katie, an average teen girl dealing with nothing more pressing than an overprotective grandmother, a complicated relationship with her guy BFF and and even more complicated situation with her girl BFF. But everything changes for Katie when people start disappearing and strange things start happening.

Katie was a great lead character, as was William, although I wish there had been a little more to him. He was almost a little too mysterious for a lot of the story, which made it hard to like or dislike him. Katie, however, was easily likable, an all-around good girl that didn't come off as too sugary sweet or sanctimonious. The story really moved for me once it moved to Russia, the location for most of the book. The author did a great job of weaving the flavor of the country into the story without making it seem like a lecture on Russian language and culture. There was some predictability here and there with different plot points, but not enough to take away the true suspense of the story. Best of all was the unique twist on the vampire genre and the paranormal themes. 3.5 mugs!
Folks in quaint Elspeth's Grove where teenager Katie lives are vanishing. Katie’s home is also invaded. Katie doesn’t know why her grandma escaped Russia with her when she was very young. Estranged friends from the old country come and inform her grandma that she needs to head back to her homeland. Get ready; there’s going to be upheaval and disruption in Katie’s life. This was a fun YA read with lots of suspense and mystery intermingled through it. The ethnic aspects of Russia as well as learning about Katie’s background I found very interesting and well written. Then there is striking and mysterious William, who Katie gets involved with. I enjoyed how their relationship blossomed and I love the names Katie and William. My youngest son’s name is William and if I would’ve had a second daughter I would have named her Catharine or Katharine, which Katie is short for. Great character name picks! This is the first book in the (Pure) series. (Firebird) is book 2. I recommend you pick up this captivating, paranormal read. It will make a great addition to any supernatural/fantasy enthusiast’s library.
First half was slow and a little boring, the plot itself was interesting enough, but the MC was more annoying than likeable.
Such as, She knew her best guy friend had feelings for her, but she ignored or seemed dinse about it and kind of lead him on.
She fell in love-love with Willam after only seeing him about three times? And they only said a few words to each other. Not enough character development! Katie never once thought about, wrote or called her best friends from school after she fled to russia with her grandmother, I get they were in hiding, but Katie never once spoke or thought of them while she was gone. After getting to russia, things escalated fairly quickly, a little too quick. The ending was cute, I have to admit.. and I do want to read book 2 someday. Beautiful cover art.
I just finished this book and only bought it this afternoon! Once I started I couldn't stop. I continued reading while I ate supper, then continued reading through two hours of The Voice, my most favorite ever show - now I'm mad at myself for not putting it down to watch the show - it's not like it wouldn't be waiting for me when the show was over LOL I was glued to the story from the first word to the last like I was hypnotized. Exemplary writing, no wasted words, the story moves along at a breakneck pace with perfect grammar and punctuation - kudos to the proofreader if there was one =)) She makes the characters real with amazingly few words to describe them, I can't really describe the magical effect the story had on me. Can't wait to read more from this author!
